If you ship into a marketplace fulfilment centre there, yes, you need that state's GSTIN and a place of business behind it. If stock never touches the state, you very likely don't - whatever a provider's sales pitch says.

Two - which warehouse does the marketplace route you to? Amazon and Flipkart publish which fulfilment centres serve your category. Register where your inventory will actually sit, not where the registration is cheapest.

Three - registration or renewal? A place of business is an annual arrangement. Budget for the renewal at the outset; a lapsed address puts the GSTIN itself at risk.

Four - who attends verification? Ask any provider one question: when the officer visits, who opens the door? If the answer is vague, the application is gambling with your timeline.

Five - what happens when a query lands? Most applications get at least one. Ours are answered by our own state representative, included in the fee. If you're paying someone who forwards queries back to you, you're the one doing the compliance.

A rent agreement in your business name - not the provider's. A no-objection certificate from the premises owner. A recent utility bill proving the premises exist. If any of the three is missing, mismatched or stale, the officer raises a query - and most rejections start exactly there.

The paperwork is necessary but not sufficient. Since the department began physical verification drives, the deciding factor is whether the address survives a visit: signage with your business name, premises that look like a workplace, and a person who can present the agreement when the officer arrives. An address that exists only in a PDF fails that day.

Timelines: a complete, verifiable file is typically approved in 7-15 working days. Queries add a week or more each round - so the cheapest way to be fast is to file a complete set the first time.

Every Nextoffis registration ships with the full document set in your business name, and our state representative attends the verification. Query handling is included until approval - we answer the officer, not forward the query back to you.

Here is what that means for marketplace sellers, in plain words.

<h2

Your principal place of business - PPOB - is simply the address at which GST registers your business in a state. A virtual place of business (VPOB) is the same thing bought as a service, and an additional place of business (APOB) is every further address added to the same registration. Different labels, one rule: the department wants a real, verifiable address behind every GSTIN.

Marketplace sellers hit this rule the moment they expand. Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho and JioMart ask for a GSTIN of the state a fulfilment centre sits in before your stock can enter it. No state registration means no FC access - and shipping everything from one corner of the country is how sellers lose the Buy Box to faster rivals.

What does the GST officer actually check? Three documents - a rent agreement in your business name, a no-objection certificate from the owner, and a recent utility bill - plus the thing most providers skip: whether the premises are real and whether anyone answers when physical verification happens.

That last part is why cheap virtual-office providers get applications rejected: an address that exists only on paper fails the moment an officer visits. Nextoffis holds 45 commercial premises across 16 states - ours, not sublet desks - with a representative in each state who attends verification.

Expanding to a new state? Start with the state pages on this site - every registration includes the complete document set and query handling until approval. Not sure which states you actually need? Talk to us first: we will tell you which registrations you need, and which you don't.
